The Reds were soundly beaten in this match by a quality looking Sporting Lisbon side but the Reds did play well in the second half and were unlucky not to score on a few occasions.
The Reds got the game started at Anfield with Conor Coady captaining the Reds side which included Jonjo Shelvey and Jack Robinson who are both regular members of the first team squad.
The competition will pit the Reds against a number of top European sides and Sporting Lisbon were the first up at Anfield. Typical of side from Europe the Portugese were very fluid in their passing and they were clearly a side well oiled in the pass and move game.
This was certainly typified on twenty six minutes when Teixeira played a one two before slotting home past a helpless Tyrell Belford.
The Reds struggled at the back on many occasions and were regularly being undone by neat, fast play from Sporting.
After an injury worry for Raheem Sterling Sporting extended their lead when Coelho swept home after a move down their right side which left Jack Robinson way out of position.
The Reds really should have hit straight back though when Morgan got in behind the back line and pulled a ball back for Suso but with the goal gaping he blasted over the bar.
A two goal half time lead was for me probably fair and the Reds needed a better second half if they were to get anything from the game.
The second half was much better from the Reds and they got a better grip on the game and certainly created many chances but they just couldn't score. Veloso in the Sporting goal pulled off saves and when we did beat him the post got in the way.
Subs Ngoo and Adorjan were left frustrated just after the hour when Ngoo held off his man and squared it but the Hungarian smashed shot off the post when he should have finished. That would have made the game so different potentially.
Sporting did score a third goal late on and again it was a classy one. Substitute Rosa curled a superb shot over Belford in to the top corner with four minutes to go.
Overall the result was fair but the scoreline perhaps a bit flattering. The Reds must look back at the game though and take something from their second half performance for sure.
The competition gives these young reserve players some great experience and that can only be good for the club as a whole. If we are to get players moving through from reserves to first team more often then this kind of game could become really crucial as it gives a new type of opposition.
MotM : Raheem Sterling - always tried to get on the ball and took a few hefty tackles but always got up and tried to beat his man every time.
