The Reds suffered a severe blow in this defeat when David Mannix was carried off with a broken leg.
Liverpool took the lead in the 11th minute when Neil Mellor ran on to Paul Anderson’s through ball to score, but Carl Finnigan equalised for the Magpies in the 33rd minute. The Reds nearly restored their lead before half time but both Mellor and Anderson were denied by Tim Krul in the Newcastle goal.
Soon after the restart Mannix was went in for a challenge and went down. He was carried off and later diagnosed with a broken tibia, a serious blow for someone who suffered a long spell out through injury whilst at the Academy.
