Bolton Wanderers 0 Liverpool 1

The Reds travelled to Bolton on the back of last weeks win and knowing that they had a good recent record over Bolton. That said Halloween in the Premiership hasn't been great for the Reds but they dug deep and managed to grind out a late win thanks to Maxi Rodriguez.

Liverpool kicked off after the home side tried a huddle. Bolton were quick to get the ball in the box and try and use the height of Davies and Elmander but the Reds were more than equal to it.

The Reds won a corner early on and Torres won that one but got just under the ball a bit and failed to direct it on target as a result.

On seven minutes a loose ball in midfield allowed Gerrard to send Torres through on goal but after good control he cut inside his man and then failed to beat the keeper. A great chance for the Reds and Torres is who you would want with it but he just seemed to get caught in two minds as to what he wanted to do.

The Reds had settled quite well in to the game and were looking to get Joe Cole involved down the left side as much as possible.

Konchesky picked up the first booking of the day when he hacked down Lee after he had danced past him. A minute later and the Reds were so nearly behind when a shot from the edge of the area had Reina palming the shot away as it was clearly moving around a bit.

That shot certainly woke the home side up and they seemed to get right in to the game as a result. It didn't last for too long mind but rather than the Reds getting back in to control the game just became a bit broken up.

Steven Gerrard was presented with a free kick some thirty yards from goal on thirty three minutes after Lucas was brought down after setting Konchesky free. That was as good as it got though as Gerrard scooped the ball well over the bar.

On forty minutes the Reds put a good little move together and Maxi was fed in the box but rather than take the shot on he set Gerrard up but he dragged his shot well wide.

A couple of minutes later at the other end Bolton won a free kick after Davies decided to fall over like a sack of potatoes - which the ref fell for. Matt Taylor got the free kick through the wall but Reina managed to save it at the second attempt.

Just on half time Bolton were given another free kick when Elmander clearly took a dive in to the area but Reina again managed to save the dead ball from Taylor. The Reds then had a free kick at the other end which an offside Kyrgiakos forced a save out of Jaaskelainen.

The whistle blew for half time and the Reds went in all square but also knowing that they needed to up the pace if they were going to get anything from the match.

Neither side made changes at half time so it was as you were. Bolton kicked off and went straight at the Reds again.

Matt Taylor picked up a deserved booking after he lost the ball in midfield and just grabbed hold of Gerrard. It stopped the Reds from breaking and he was rightly booked for the cynical nature of the pull.

The Reds gradually started to get a bit more possession and they moved up the pitch a little without really troubling Bolton.

Just short of the hour mark and the Reds finally put something together and Cole set Gerrard up but his shot was blocked en route to goal and it fell to Jaaskelainen.

However the Reds were then forced in to a switch as Joe Cole went down clutching his hamstring. The physio came on and after a lengthy chat decided no risks and he limed off to be replaced by Ngog.

On sixty two minutes Torres forced Jaaskelainen in to a save with a shot from outside the box after Gerrard had been taken out in the build up.

The Reds were now starting to up the pressure on the home side and on sixty five minutes Meireles nearly found Maxi at the far post but it was put out for a corner which Kyrgiakos headed just over the bar.

On seventy minutes the Reds broke right down the pitch and when Torres headed back from a Gerrard cross Maxi sent a volley over his head but just over the bar although the keeper had it covered.

Bolton had a chance a couple of minutes later when Torres conceded cheap ball in his own half. It fell to Elmander but his shot from outside the box was deflected just wide of the post with Reina at full stretch.

On seventy three minutes Lee was replaced by Rodrigo for Bolton and inside a minute Elmander was again shooting but this time well off target.

Martin Skrtel gave away a free kick on the touch line and was booked as well for his efforts under pressure from Davies. The free kick was then headed just past the far post.

Jaaskelainen was fast out of his goal on seventy eight minutes when Torres played Ngog in behind the line but the ball just favoured the keeper and the danger was cleared. The game was really stretching out now and Torres was trying to run off a knock to his ankle.

On eighty one minutes Elmander was replaced by Klasnic and he got a mixed reception following his recent run in with the law.

The Reds so nearly created a great chance on eighty four minutes when they raced through but as it had been all the game the final ball was lacking. Torres just had to feed the ball to Gerrard but the ball was poor.

That all changed on eighty six minutes though when Lucas played a ball to Torres and he got this one right to feed Maxi in the box and he poked the ball right footed under Jaaskelainen.

On eighty nine minutes the Reds made a second switch when Poulsen replaced Meireles as the game was held up for a Reds free kick when Steinsson left a foot in on Maxi.

There were four minutes of time added on at the end of the ninety. Half way through that time and Davies headed the ball in to the area but Reina managed to get to the ball just before Rodrigo and collected at the second attempt.

Bolton tried to pump everything they had in to the box during stoppage time but the Reds held firm and the Reds had their first away win of the season. A gritty performance overall which I think we just about did enough to deserve the win in.

MotM : Sotirios Kyrgiakos - the big man continues to show top form for us and kept Bolton at bay. Lucas also deserves a mention for what he did throughout the game in giving the ball easily to a Red short every time.
