The Reds stuttered their way to a nil nil draw away at Utrecht. In what proved to be a dull game the home side were the ones who will feel the more disappointed as they had better chances. The Reds for their part just didn't play well at all, gave away chances to the opposition and gave no service up front at all. It's certainly not easy watching this football at the moment.
The Reds put out a strong line up for the game with Dirk Kuyt facing one of his former sides and partnering Torres up front. The midfield saw Lucas and Poulsen combine for a slow and lethargic centre with Meireles and Cole out wide technically although always cutting inside.
Liverpool got the game started in their all black third kit. On fourteen minutes Joe Cole sent in a half hearted shot after cutting inside as the Reds struggled as usual to get going in the first half. They either score very early or just don't play the first forty five at the moment.
Midway through the half and a weak Meireles header went straight to the keeper. Utrecht for their part were not massively troubling Reina although did look like they might have a bit of pace about them. The day had been rainy and as such the surface was rather heavy and that showed in the play being poor.
Reina was involved seven minutes before half time to keep out a good shot which came from Kuyt dithering to clear a corner. He clearly though he had all day but was caught out.
The second half didn't prove much better for either side but Utrecht did have a few more chances to score and often through poor defending from the Reds.
Eleven minutes in to the second half there was a scramble in the box as Reina flapped at a cross and the ball was played goalwards. Meireles managed to clear the ball from the line and this actually resulted in the best Reds chance of the game. Kuyt picked the ball up high up and crossed to Torres bu this flick at goal was just wide with the Reds striker claiming a save.
The game just wasn't flowing at all and the Reds were looking so one dimensional and some players looked very drained - Cole in particular looked very tired yet there was no action on the bench for some reason.
The game was so dire I'm trying to block it from the memory. The Reds change finally came with ten minutes to go and within a minute of coming on Maxi had seen an overhead kick sail just over the bar.
Thankfully the ref didn't add too much time on at the end of the game and the whistle was blown to send the Reds home with a point. Playing such a dull game at least we got a point from it if nothing else.
MotM : Jose Reina - struggling to pick one out and Pepe did flap at a cross which nearly gave away a goal but he also commanded his area otherwise and pulled off a couple of good saves in the game.
