The public trial match played a week before the season saw the suggested firts team play a second eleven known as the whites due to their strip.

The whites won this match and after the game the club directors decided that Jones, Carney, Ramsden and Nieuwenhuys should all play in the first match of the season rather than those picked for the Reds on the day.
