The Reds progressed to the next round of the League cup thanks to a 2-1 victory over Cardiff. Cardiff had started well but in the end I reckon quality was the difference and that's why the Reds took their place in the draw.
The Reds made a host of changes t the side with El Zhar coming in on the right and Jack Hobbs got a first start alongside Jamie Carragher. El Zhar it was who struck the first goal and then Steven Gerrard grabbed the winner just a minute after Cardiff had equalised.
A noisy atmosphere at Anfield - mainly by a lower Anny Road end full of Cardiff fans saw the away side kick off attacking the Kop end.
Cardiff had a great opportunity after just four minutes of the match when Aurelio brought his man down just outside the D. Fowler curled the free kick but Itandje dived to his post and pushed the ball away for a corner.
In truth apart from the noise of the away end the first half was rather dull. Neither side really looked like grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and bombing on from that.
The second half surely had to be better. The best the Reds had to offer in the first half really was a few pop shots from distance that never troubled Oakes at all.
The second half ultimately started great for the Reds. Just two minutes after the start of the half and El Zhar had smacked a superb shot from fully twenty five yards. I'd wanted the ball pushed wide right but after the shot flew past Oakes the Reds were in front.
It meant the game started to feel more of a cup tie from this point. Cardiff had to come out even more because the game was going to be settled on the night. That meant more openings for the Reds at the back as well.
As the game started to open up the Reds sent Benayoun on and he was the ideal player for this kind of game. He can really open up a defence.
Within a couple of minutes the Reds had conceded an equaliser though through Darren Purse. The Reds hadn't looked superb in the air all night from free kicks and when one was sent in on sixty four minutes Purse rose well to head home.
It sent Cardiff fans mad with joy but it proved to be very short lived for them. The Reds went straight up the other end and a great run from Benayoun and a square ball in the area from him saw Gerrard crash the ball home.
On seventy minutes El Zhar was switched for the return to first team action of Harry Kewell. He got a great reception overall with a few wondering if this was a cup final. In fairness to Kewell he looked to get involved and take his man on when he could.
As the clock ticked on the Reds were hoping to grab a third goal and kill the game off but they just couldn't create that opening. It meant a nervy time for the Reds and Lucas was one who started suffering at times. He seemed to go to sleep and he was switched near the end for Mascherano who came on, shored things up and ensured the Reds were in the draw for the next round.
Overall this was an ok game with nothing spectacular. The second goal was crucial in it's timing whilst El Zhar will be made up with his effort.
MotM : Jack Hobbs - for a first appearance and at Anfield I thought he was really calm and assured. This can only do him the power of good.
