The Reds lost the Asia Trophy final after a penalty shoot out. The main game had finished all square at 0-0 and with no extra time it was straight to a shoot out which the Reds, unusually lost after misses from both Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun.
Portsmouth got the game underway in front a packed stadium but it was the Reds who were the far better side. The Reds will be disappointed in the sense that they were by far the better side, created stuff but ultimately finished poorly.
The game saw a debut from sub Lucas Leiva after his recent transfer to the Reds being finalised. That came after his European passport was granted. Also cleared to play - although only at the last minute was Fernando Torres - he also came from the bench in the game.
The Reds had plenty of chances throughout the match with Dirk Kuyt being the most guilty of misses. Of course pre-season is about getting sharper so if this helps him along the way then that is more important.
Despite their dominance and use of some good width to the game the Reds went in all square at half time.
The second half followed a similar pattern in that the Reds were the better side but failed to make the dominance count. Sissoko had a penalty shout early in the half but Mark Clattenburg rightly waved away his appeal and the game went on.
Just short of the hour mark Pennant had a great chace. Ex-Red David James went walk about but failed to win the bal and left Pennant with a goal to aim at . Sadly though the angle and pressure beat Pennant and his shot went wide.
By this time Fernando Torres had come on for Kewell. Torrse had one superb opportunity when he was sent clear by Reina. After checking back he virtually lost possession but just managed to toe poke the ball goalwards and nearly caught James out.
As time ticked on the one thing the crowd wanted to see was Steven Gerrard. With five minutes to go he was introduced for Pennant. With time ticking on as well it was clearly a sub with a view for penalties. Shortly before Gerrard's introduction Lucas Leiva came on for Sissoko who had run himself in to the ground.
As the final whistle blew it was all down to a penalty shot out. No Extra time in all this heat was a good thing for the players involved.
Utaka took the first spot kick and shot wde to give the Reds an edge. steven Gerrard struck home to take advantage of that edge. Matt Taylor and Dirk Kuyt scored their kicks before Lua lua scored his with a very confident spot kick. Fernando Torress then saw his spot kick saved with some ease. Hreidarsson then put Pompey in the lead. Benayoun then saw his penalty saved by James and it was down to Kranjcar to win it for Pompey. Kranjcar had only come on in the final twenty seconds of the game - obviously to take a kick. He scored and the trophy was heading to Portsmouth.
