The Reds went through on penalties after a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town.
An El Hadji Diouf penalty in normal time equalised for the Reds after Tommy Miller had opened the scoring for the plucky tractor boys.
Ipswich played well in this game and took the lead on 14 minutes. The Reds never equalised until the 54th minute. Jerzy Dudek played in goal despite his blunder at the weekend. In fairness to Dudek as well he came out with his head high and the crowd got right behind the keeper.
The Reds finally got back in to the game when Neil Mellor was brought down by Venus. El Hadji Diouf made no mistake with the spot kick. This really kicked the Reds in to action now and they did have the ball in the net again but Dermot Gallagher pulled play back for a dodgy free kick against Gerrard.
Extra time saw chances for both sides before the spot kick lottery came. Well it's not usually a lottery for the Reds but Ipswich held their nerves well. Well apart from Jamie Clapham that is who smacked the bar with his kick. The Reds saw all five of their kicks go in from Gerrard, Carragher, Baros, Riise and Diouf.
The Reds progress to play Aston Villa in the next round.
