A routine win for the Reds over Charlton saw former keeper Bob Boulder beaten twice. It took the Reds just fourteen minutes to get the scoring started. Houghton fed Beardsley who shot straight away. The first effort was saved but Beardsley then rounded Boulder to slot home.
The Reds continued to dominate the game without scoring. The departure of Jan Molby certainly affected the Reds' play when he was forced off with an injury. Mike Marsh replaced him in what was the Scouser's first appearance in a Reds shirt. It wasn't until two minutes from time that the points were secured though. John Aldridge was upended in the box and he himself got up to tuck the ball away.
