A great Reds performance ensured that they took all the points in this clash with Spurs. It was Spurs who took the lead though after just two minutes when Gary Stevens blasted home after Souness only half cleared a free kick.
Spurs had chances to extend their lead but Dick only hit the woodwork with a header. That finally stirred the Reds in to action but it was just before half time before they equalised. Whelan put Dalglish in and he finished past former Reds keeper Ray Clemence. The Reds even managed to go in to half time ahead when Ronnie Whelan blasted home right footed.
The win was secured thanks to Sammy Lee. Johnston set up the Scouser who scored from twenty yards out.
