After a decent start to the season the Reds were brought down to earth with a bump. Former Red Matt Busby was in charge of United. The game was played at Maine Road with Old Trafford still being rebuilt after the bomb damage from the second world war.
The Reds were without the injured Billy Liddell and Sidlow who was away on army duty. United opened the scoring on nine minutes through Pearson. He then doubled the lead just short of the half hour and the game already looked gone.
The second half saw United run in three more goals without reply and United sat at the top of the table as a result.
