Bob Paisley came in for his league debut in this one. Paisley forced a corner in the second minute which Billy Liddell Scored from directly.
Bill Jones made it two nil and then after half an hour of the game Jones headed the Reds further ahead.
As the Reds continued to push forward Willie Fagan made it four for the Reds before half time.
After half time a Balmer shot was fumbled by Chelsea keeper Robertson and the Reds were 5-0 up. Billy Liddle ten went on a great run which resulted in him shooting home the sixth for the Reds.
At this point everything seemed rosy and even when Goulden got one for Chelsea on 55 minutes there didn't seem too much concern. However Chelsea stuck at their game and got a second soon after through an Argne free kick. Machin then scored twice in as many minutes to make it 6-4.
Panic was etched on to the fans but with three minutes to go Willie Fagan struck again to finish the scoring at 7-4.
