The Reds faced another home tie in the Cup against second division opposition. This time Burnley proved strong and nearly took the lead in the game as ll. Clemence tippsed one shot on to the bar after just ten minutes.
The opening goal came just short of half time when David Johnson headed home a Ray Kennedy centre. The game was secured with goals either side of the hour mark. First Souness scored from the edge of the box. Two minutes later Johnson finished of a fine move from steve Heighway.
